Matthew writes dark, edgy adventures for young teen readers, inspired by the life and work of remarkable figures from history.

His first book, Out of the Smoke, was inspired by the work of the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, and plunges the reader into the mean streets of Victorian London.

His latest book, Through Water and Fire, is a gripping Tudor adventure that highlights the support of Anne Boleyn for the then-illegal practice of Bible translation. It was shortlisted for the 2024 Young Quills Award.

Matthew worked with deaf children in secondary schools and colleges for many years before moving to an office job with the local council – writing policy! He still enjoys visiting schools and libraries to hold workshops and events, inspiring young people with a love of history and literature.

He lives in Greenwich, and enoys exploring the local history within the borough, especially in Eltham Palace which is his favoruite place to spend a sunny afternoon …
